Chitose Salmon Aquarium in Chitose, Hokkaido
This is a facility where you can learn about the ecosystem at an aquarium specializing in freshwater fish, mainly salmon, which is rare even in Japan.
â–²The 5m deep, 300 ton tank is home to fish such as huchen and white sturgeon, making it the largest freshwater fish tank in Hokkaido.
â–²This is the first facility in Japan where you can observe a natural river through glass, and see the different fish life cycles that change with the seasons.
In spring you can see young salmon heading out to sea, in summer you can see Japanese dace spawning, and in autumn you can see schools of salmon migrating upstream to spawn.
