What to Expect

The Tottori Sand Dunes are located in the eastern part of Tottori Prefecture, with a length of about 16 kilometers from east to west and a width of about 2 kilometers from north to south. They are relatively large sand dunes in Japan. This is a mountain peak formed by the accumulation of volcanic ash falling on the mud sand of the Chiyogawa River. It is a masterpiece of nature created after 100,000 years of wind and waves from the Sea of Japan. There are depressions as deep as 40 meters and hills as high as 50 meters on the sand dunes; there are patterns called "wind patterns" blown out by strong winds, and there are sand curtains that slide down like an avalanche from the surface of the sand dunes. These magnificent sand dunes are ever-changing. never stopped. Take the cable car down to the coastline, and you can enjoy the majestic and expansive scenery of the boundless sea and sand dunes. In addition to the view of the sand dunes, there are various recreational activities, such as riding on an exotic camel or horse-drawn carriage, or taking a paraglider and sandboarding.
