What to Expect

Kiyotsu Gorge is one of Japan's three great valleys. Its steep, columnar formations are breathtakingly beautiful, contrasting with the turbulent Kiyotsu River and the jagged rock faces, creating a majestic landscape. With the completion of a valley tunnel, this magnificent view can be admired from an observation deck.Formed by volcanic activity 80,000 years ago, the canyon stretches approximately 12 kilometers. Its basalt cliffs, rising hundreds of meters on either side, create a breathtaking spectacle. The 750-meter-long sightseeing tunnel, opened in 1996, features four observation decks. The water mirror at the terminus, the "Light Cave," transforms the canyon's wonders into a dreamlike spectacle, offering a unique blend of beauty in every season: cherry blossoms adorn the rock walls in spring, green suffuses the deep pools in summer, maples blaze in autumn, and snow blankets the cliffs in winter.
