Miraikan, the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, opened on July 9, 2001 with the founding philosophy of "a place open to all people to understand science and technology as culture, and to think about and discuss its role in society and its future possibilities." Based on the Science and Technology Basic Plan (at the time) for a nation founded on science and technology creativity, the museum opened as a base for deepening understanding of science and technology, and is run by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), a national research and development corporation.
