Oniishi Bozu Jigoku

559-1 Kannawa, Beppu, Oita 874-0000, Japan

Descriptions

Oniishi Bozu Jigoku is one of Beppu’s famous “Hells” (Jigoku), known for its unique gray hot mud pools that bubble and steam like shaved heads—hence the name “Bozu” (monk). Formed by natural geothermal activity, this attraction showcases the powerful underground heat that Beppu is famous for.

What to Expect

Onishibozhu Hell is one of the eight hell hot springs of Beppu's sightseeing route "Hell Tour", and it is also a distinctive one. In Japan, Fangzhu means a monk. The gray hot mud is boiling in the pool and bubbling out continuously. The large and small bubbles are shaped like a monk's head, hence the name Ghost Stone Fangzhu Hell. This hell has an air vent called Ghost Snoring, which makes a loud rumbling sound.
