What to Expect

Gassho-zukuri Minkaen preserves and opens 25 Gassho-zukuri houses, including 9 important cultural relics in the prefecture. In addition to the main house, there are shrines, temples, waterwheel huts, etc. The attic of the main house can also be visited. Among them, Yamashita House is one of the few 18th-century Gassho-zukuri houses that still exist in Shirakawa-go. This outdoor museum recreates the traditional lifestyle by relocating unused Gassho-zukuri houses in Shirakawa-go. Its biggest feature is the various functional buildings, such as storage rooms and temples, and the houses that can be seen everywhere. There are displays of local handicrafts, some of which you can even try your hand at. There are also various restaurants and Souvenir shops, which are perfect for taking a break after a tiring day.
