What to Expect
The Kobe Municipal Museum was formerly known as the Kobe Municipal Nanban Art Museum. It was merged with the Kobe Municipal Archaeological Museum in 1982. It was built and expanded on the basis of the old Yokohama Shokin Bank Kobe branch, which was built in 1935. The collection includes 21 national treasures and 76 key cultural relics, totaling 38,000 collectibles. Especially famous are the Nanban paintings from the 16th to 17th centuries. The paintings on these screens or scrolls are inspired by the European Renaissance art brought by the missionaries. Some of the works depict the scene of the Portuguese fleet landing in Japan at that time. They are very ornamental and worth seeing.
